Summary of the idea/dream: If you like home plants, but aren't sure which one to plant, I may recommend you spiderwort. This plant requires little care, but at the same time is nice enough!
Home land of spiderwort is Tropical and Western America. There are about 100 kinds of this plant. Some of them are cultivated in open soil (spider lily), however, the majority are heat-loving plants and grow only indoors.
Spiderwort is a well known and undemanding plant. Doesn't suffer from diseases and pests. It grows in any soil, even in water, in a flowerpot with moss or sand.

First of all, you should know that the best place to keep spiderwort at is half-darkened one. In the bright sun its leaves burns away, but in the shade particolored leaves lose ornamentality of colour and become usually green.
Like any marsh plants, spiderwort needs abundant watering. It's not "fastidious" about soil, but grows better in a mixture of deciduous and humous one.
In two years spiderwort gets old, so its leaves dry up at foot. That's why annually you should cut off its suckers and
